Outlaw Trails of the Old West (Route 66) Motorcycle Tour

Like a cowboy riding a Harley instead of a mustang, we ride the trails of the past with modern conveniences. The Mojave Desert, the grand Canyon, Capital Reef, Lake Powell Bryce, Zion, Death Valley, Yosemite, and the California Gold Country are but a few of the sights before San Francisco, Monterey, the Big Sur coastline.

Itinerary

DAY 1

FROM – TO: San Francisco International Airport to Hotel

MILES: 20

HOTEL: Oasis Hotel or equivalent

OF INTEREST: Catch a cab or shuttle to the hotel for a nap before the evening dinner party where your tour guides will introduce themselves, the tour itinerary and complete travel documents. Then we recommend an early bedtime to prepare for the adventure to come.

DAY 2

FROM – TO: San Francisco to Monterey

MILES: 121

HOTEL: Sand Dollar Inn or equivalent

OF INTEREST: We head out of San Francisco on beautiful, winding Skyline Boulevard for coffee at Alice's Restaurant and then onto the Pacific Coast High way #1 south to Santa Cruz for lunch and fun and sun on the beach and boardwalk and then on to Steinbeck's Cannery Row in Monterey.

DAY 3

FROM – TO: Monterey to Pismo Beach

MILES: 147

HOTEL: The Whaler Inn or equivalent

OF INTEREST: Morning takes you down Highway 1 along the edge of the cliffs of Big Sur for 90 miles of the most incredible coastal scenery anywhere in the world. You glide through the turns high above the rugged coastline and remote ocean bays. You cruise past San Simeon 'castle' tiny seaside art communities and miles of sandy beaches on the south side of Big Sur to the hotel in Pismo Beach. As night falls, the jasmine flowers perfume the soft coastal air. It feels like paradise and it just might be. Welcome to southern California.

DAY 4

FROM – TO: Pismo Beach to Los Angeles

MILES: 180

HOTEL: Best Western Hotel

OF INTEREST: Tonight we can party in L.A.!! Cruise the famous Sunset Strip, maybe stop at the House of Blues, roar through Hollywood, Westwood, and Beverly Hills. Or, you can just rest.

DAY 5

FROM – TO: Los Angeles to Palm Springs

MILES: 174

HOTEL: Motel 6

OF INTEREST: You are a modern cowboy heading for the open range on an iron horse vibrating with 1340 cc's of power. In minutes you and your new friends are out of the city and on a winding mountain road en route to a little biker's bar on a cliff overlooking Lake Elsinore. After lunch, the cool air warms as you soar like an eagle into the open country of the Mojave desert, and the home of the movie stars, Palm Springs.

DAY 6

FROM – TO: Palm Springs to Laughlin

MILES: 239

HOTEL: Riverside Hotel

OF INTEREST: The Mojave Desert air rips past your face bringing unfamiliar smells of the old west: sage pinion pine and datura as you roll into Joshua Tree National Monument where some of the best climbers in the world gather to challenge the vertical walls. Then you find Old Route 66 and follow it across the historic desert. By day's end your hotel looks very good as you pull onto the main street of the wild west gambling town of Laughlin, Nevada.

DAY 7

FROM – TO: Laughlin to Grand Canyon National Park

MILES: 328

HOTEL: Bright Angel Lodge

OF INTEREST: W e follow RT66 most of the way along the high plateaus of Arizona. We stop for lunch in the old west town of Williams or Ash Fork and then on to one the greatest sights man has ever seen - the spectacular Grand Canyon, in time for the reddest sunset you've ever seen!!

DAY 8

FROM – TO: Grand Canyon National Park to Monument Valley

MILES: 201

HOTEL: San Juan Inn - Mexican Hat, Utah

OF INTEREST: We leave early and the air is cool and brisk at 7500 feet as we follow the Canyon east through magnificent pine forests. We stop at Navajos roadside stands for beautiful turquoise jewelry and Indian artifacts. And then on to the incredible Monument Valley and into Keyenta for lunch. Then we enter Utah and follow the San Juan River up through Mexican hat. Here we can view some Anastazi ruins.

DAY 9

FROM – TO: Monument Valley to Bryce Canyon

HOTEL: Ruby's Inn

MILES: 291

OF INTEREST: Today's ride is breathtaking. We cross the Colorado River where it pours into the gigantic Lake Powell where we can go for a swim. And then we wind up to higher ground and into Hanksville for lunch. Just before the incredible Capital Reef National Park, we pull o ver for a delicious swim in a cool pool under a cascading waterfall. Refreshed, we roar on up to the Devil's Backbone and through the Escalante Wilderness Area, and on down to Bryce Canyon.

DAY 10

FROM – TO: Bryce to Las Vegas

HOTEL: Flamingo Hilton Casino and Hotel or equivalent

MILES: 240

OF INTEREST: We see both Bryce and Zion today. Besides seeing the most beautiful rock formations found anywhere on Earth, we also get some of the most challenging motorcycle riding of the tour - the switchbacks of Zion ! It doesn't take long before the cool, mountain air is replaced by the heat of the desert. Fortunately you aren't far from the neon oasis of Las Vegas where we have an evening of outrageous revelry planned on the gaming tables at the famous Las Vegas Strip.

DAY 11

FROM – TO: Las Vegas to Mammoth Lakes

MILES: 314

HOTEL: Alpenhof Lodge

OF INTEREST: Your guides wake you up early this morning and you find yourself rolling across the desert in the beautiful early morning light. Soon you pass the infamous Cottontail Ranch and swing into the switchbacks that lie north of Death Valley and zigzag over mountain passes and valley floor s into Big Pine California. We head north through Bishop and up to Mammoth hot springs for a refreshing dip in the healing sulphur waters after the longest days ride of the tour

DAY 12

FROM – TO: Mammoth Lakes to Yosemite

MILES: 91

HOTEL: Tent-camp

OF INTEREST: You push your Harley through the winding granite canyons of Tioga Pass into Yosemite National Park where you enjoy most of the day exploring one of the natural wonders of the world. You take a trail that is etched into a vertical cliff as the mist from a 1000 meter waterfall keeps you cool even as its roar deafens you. After you return to the valley floor you spy two fearless climbers clinging like flies to the granite face. You watch as they prepare to spend the night hanging from the wall. Your tent-camp in the pines of the valley is significantly more comfortable. You sit silently beside the gentle sounds of the Tuoloumne River and watch the milky way spread across the western sky as night falls on the valley.

DAY 13

FROM – TO: Yosemite to Lake Tahoe

HOTEL: Harrahs Hotel and Casino

MILES: 208

OF INTEREST: We ride along California's famous gold country highway. For those rider s who like to pan for gold, we'll stop in Jamestown and give it a try. Then we zig-zag along the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains and on up to the most beautiful lake in the world - Lake Tahoe, for an evening of shows, gambling, and relaxing at 6000 feet.

DAY 14

FROM – TO: Lake Tahoe to Clearlake

HOTEL: Konocti Resort Hotel and Spa

MILES: 200

OF INTEREST: We wind down the mountains through historic Nevada City, across the Sacramento Valley, and into the famous Northern California wine country for and evening on beautiful Clearlake. Optional water-skiing or wave-runner adventures.

DAY 15

FROM – TO: Clearlake to San Francisco

HOTEL: Oasis Inn

MILES: 208

OF INTEREST: We cruise the wine country today and then over to the pacific ocean. With the western sun glinting off skyscrapers, you rumble in a pack of Harleys across the Golden Gate Bridge into one of the most beautiful cities in the world, San Francisco. Your hotel is in the middle of the city, a perfect location for an evening of riding on the cable car from the blues clubs on Fisherman's Wharf to the jazz spots in North Beach to China town.

DAY 16

FROM – TO: Depart

We say goodbye to our guides and catch cab to the airport in time for our flights.
